Thinking of Using AI for Construction Photos? Read This First!

Could AI-Generated Images Ruin Your Reputation?

Well, here we are in the midst of all this AI hype.
Everywhere you turn, there’s talk of AI taking over, but let’s be honest—how many of us really understand what AI is?
I dare to say, the majority of us have very little clue about AI.

Facing the Reality of AI in Photography

Let’s tackle a pressing question: Should we fear that AI is going to take our jobs? For us photographers, is there a real risk that in the near future people won’t need us because they can generate their own images? The straightforward answer is: not entirely, but it’s not as simple as a yes or no.

AI is advancing quickly, and yes, it can produce images.

But let’s dive into what this really means for professional photography, especially in niche markets like construction.

AI-Generated Images:
What AI Can and Can't Do

AI can produce a variety of images—yes, including headshots, team photos, and even some basic site photography.
However, these images lack authenticity.
You might end up with a team member who mysteriously sprouts an extra hand, or faces that look so polished they’re more at home in a sci-fi flick than on a construction site. But most of all the AI generated pictures are not you. They might look similar to you, however who knows you can pick it up that it is well..fake. As well as all your team photos.

Authenticity and Trust: Why They're Key

But here’s the bigger picture: how many business owners genuinely prefer these AI-generated images over authentic photos captured on their actual construction sites, documenting real events?
I reckon not many. Authenticity is massive, and as we move forward, trust is going to become even more crucial.
Business is built on relationships and credibility.
Can an AI-generated image that might “fake” elements hold up the trust you’ve built? Doubtful. Like the one below. Weird fingers, non-related faces, clothing and I am not even going to describe the “bob-cat” in the background.

The Role of Professional Photographers

So, am I, as a photographer, becoming obsolete? I don’t see it. Here’s why

Understanding Context

AI lacks the ability to understand the context fully. It doesn’t know your team, it can’t copy text, so when you’re wearing your branded shirts with your business logo and details on it, well AI will create something funny instead. Not because it’s not smart enough to copy what’s there, but because of legal issues it is rightfully not allowed to do so. These are very important nuances that a human photographer captures. we are also able to capture not just what’s there, but what it feels like to be there.

Customisation and Adaptation

A photographer adapts to the environment. We change our angles, settings, and approaches based on what the scene demands. AI is rigid. It follows algorithms without the nuanced understanding of what makes each project unique.

Quality of Interaction

Photographers interact with the team; they capture moments of interaction, concentration, and even the casual banter during breaks. These moments bring life to your photos and to the story we tell. AI is far from replicating this level of interaction and experience.

Should you generate your business photos with AI?

However, we shouldn’t completely write off AI either. AI has its place, especially in repetitive tasks or for creating preliminary visual drafts quickly and cheaply. It can be a useful tool in the toolbox, but it’s just that—a tool, not a replacement.

So should you generate your business photos with AI?

The question isn’t just whether AI can take decent photos—it can, up to a point. The real question is about the depth, the connection, and the trust those photos embody.

When you mix cement without carefully measuring the ingredients, you might initially get something that seems okay. But this shortcut can be misleading. Over time, incorrect ratios could lead to structural weaknesses, cracking, or even catastrophic failures, jeopardizing the project’s integrity and safety.

Similarly, using AI to generate construction photos can initially seem sufficient. Yet, like poorly mixed cement, these images may lack the necessary depth and accuracy to truly represent the project’s quality and details, which could lead to various issues:

Lack of Reliability

AI-generated images may not consistently capture the true conditions or progress of a construction site, leading to discrepancies between the actual site status and the portrayed status. This could affect project monitoring, client updates, and even regulatory compliance documentation.

Destroyed Reputation

If stakeholders, clients, or regulators discover that the visual documentation does not accurately represent the site, it can damage the credibility and reputation of your business. In construction, trust is a key asset, and once damaged, it’s difficult to restore.

Ethical Concerns and Faking

There’s also an ethical dimension to consider. Using AI to generate images that are supposed to document reality, but which may embellish or omit details, can be seen as faking results. This could raise serious ethical questions about transparency and honesty in your business practices.

Just as a building requires the right mix of concrete to ensure its strength and durability, your construction business needs accurate, reliable visual documentation to support its integrity and reputation. In both cases, cutting corners can lead to serious consequences, underscoring why taking the proper, measured approach is critical.

Let’s use AI where it makes sense, but remember, when it comes to truly showcasing your construction project, your team, your gear, your tools, your site with all its hard work and success, nothing beats the real thing.
